Scope and Contents: Sketchbooks created by Fred Hagstrom as he led studio arts students on Off Campus Studies programs in the South Pacific. The drawing course was conducted largely in National Parks, in a course that combined drawing with the outdoors.  From Hagstrom: "The subjects were drawing from nature, but also figure studies and portraits.   The aim was to deepen students’ connection or interest with nature at the same time as improving drawing skills.  We began by teaching bookbinding for the sketchbooks.  These then became the portable drawing class.  The course tried to establish drawing as a kind of habit or everyday activity. In this way, it differed from the kind of class assignments that we can do on campus. Drawing requires time, experimentation, and concentration.  The off-campus environment proved fruitful for all of these to come together.  I told the students, “Fun, but work”.  And by making drawing seem like something they really wanted to do, we achieved that.  My drawings were intended as an example.  I tried to exemplify the joy in drawing, and in being in the places we were privileged to visit."
