A Better Chance programs were hosted at Carleton from 1966-1972, other programs were hosted by 24 other institutions around the country. The goal of Project ABC was to give socially underprivileged young persons the opportunity to attend private and first-rate public high schools so that they had "a better chance" of succeeding in college. Students underwent a summer orientation program involving intensive study, hosted by Carleton. Carleton students underwent training to be tutors for Project ABC, volunteering to tutor and mentor these young people. In addition to hosting orientation, Carleton also provided a residence house for ABC students attending Northfield High School.
