Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection consists of four series--President's Reports to the Board of Trustees (1873-1908), which usually include summary reports from all College departments and offices; Executive Committee Reports to the Board of Trustees (1874-1922), which concern those matters (mostly financial) that required attention in between regular board meetings; Financial Secretary's Reports to the Board of Trustees (1874-1924), relating primarily to the overall financial health of the College; Board Meetings:  Correspondence, Minutes, Reports, etc. (1885-1924).  This latter series contains drafts of meeting minutes (the official minutes are in bound volumes organized as part of the Board of Trustees record group), miscellaneous but often important reports (e.g., the report of the 1902 presidential search committee, reports of the athletic union and alumni organization, reports of the financial "field agents" and campaign consultants, reports on trust funds, ocassional reports of the Finance Committee), and miscellaneous documents (including copies of wills, resolutions, and commencement programs).  Correspondence is usually routine (notification of absence from a meeting, acceptance of nomination to the board, resignations from the board, formal notice of resignation from the faculty).  The Board Meeting files for 1907 and 1908 cover the period of President Sallmon's resignation and include documents relating to the resignation of Prof. William Payne.

N.B.  This is the most important record groups in the Archives for Carleton history during the 19th century.

Biographical Note

Page was Carleton's Financial Secretary and Recording Secretary (1885-1904), Treasurer and Recording Secretary (1904-10) and Secretary (1910-25) for the Carleton Board of Trustees.  Page was a Trustee from 1871 until 1925 (plus two years as Trustee Emeritus).

Acquisition Method: The bulk of the 1906-24 material was transferred to the Archives (in a binder) from the Vice President and Treasurer's office in May of 1988.
