Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection contains office files mostly from Registrars Peter Olesen (1923-49), Kenneth Wegner (1949-59), and Donald Klinefelter (1962-70). The files were quite disorganized, and the processor has imposed an artificial order to organize them.

The office of the registrar, first established in 1873, has often been run by faculty members on a part-time or even extra-time basis. although there were two brief exceptions in the 1960s, Donald Klinefelter was essentially the first full-time registar at Carleton; this may explain the abundance of studies and reports from the Klinefelter period. The main task of the registrar is the issuance and recording of student grades, but other duties include: arranging registration, issuing transcripts, computing grade indexes, compiling names of seniors to reommend for graduation, and recommending students for honors and awards.

The bulk of the collection contains the results of yet another task of the registrar: compiling studies, reports, and data on a wide variety of topics. These range from classroom space studies to reports on faculty grading to data on the correlation between standardized college entrance exams and grades. Especially complete is the demographic section, with topics like Geographical Distribution and Church Affiliation. The collection also contains--in Enrollment, Demographics: Summer Session, and Misc.: ASTU--some interesting material on veteran enrollment during World War II. The Registrar's handwritten notes were generally discarded from the record group when the relevant finished reports existed. Also, any UMACRAO material not directly pertinent to Carleton was discarded. Additional annual reports to the President may be found in the separate Annual Reports record group, and Registrar's tanscripts may be found in a separate record group.
