Biographical Note
Biographical note contributed by Jane Hamilton - Jane Hamilton was born in Oak Park, Illinois in 1957. Both her grandmother and her mother were journalists and fiction writers, and she assumed that if you were a girl you were supposed to become a writer. She graduated from Carleton in 1979 with that aim in mind, although she’d been told by various professors that writing fiction was not usually a viable profession. This was sound advice. She married an apple farmer, Robert Willard, in Rochester, Wisconsin in 1982. Between harvest and planting she wrote her first novel, The Book of Ruth, published in 1988. She has written six novels since, several short stories, and many essays.
Her daughter Hannah graduated from Carleton in 2010. Her son attended Lawrence University, where he had an English class from a Carleton grad who’d studied with the great professors of the 1980s, Carleton doing its work in Wisconsin.
Hamilton’s work has won prizes and two of the novels, The Book of Ruth and A Map of the World, have been made into films. She has taught at Carleton College, in the Warren Wilson MFA program, at Luther College, as well as conducting many workshops nationally and internationally. Although there was not a writing program at Carleton when she matriculated, the two workshops she took, and the professors she studied with, were instrumental in teaching her the craft of writing.

- Series 9: Various
- From Hamilton: There is no particular rhyme or reason here-just incidental things. Interviews, invitations-I came upon a box and had to start. Therefore: A miscellaneous collection of talks, invitations, and thanks for the talks which I couldn't bring myself to throw out, still in the pandemic, still isolated in some ways. Also, the stage of life I'm in: did all that actually happen? But, also, there is the pleasure of currating the past. Throwing out everything that had to do with Cookies and Culture in Burlington, Wisconsin, which turned out to be a humiliating evening. For instance, the committee sent a LIMO to pick me up, which was completely unnecessary and sweet, but didn't shedule it for the return trip. What was clear at the event was how most guests would so have preferred to see Tony Romo-who grew up in Burlington, who was not invited, who was not in any way a consideration for a Burlington Arts event.

- Folder 1: The Once and Future Nicholas Plumly
- I thought, I could write a not great middle grade reader, couldn't I? This project was misguided. The Once and Future Nicholas Plumly. When in 2014 I sent it to a retired children's book editor friend, she said simply. "NO." I include it because it is set in the Nutting House. And because it was a stupid move on my part. Arrogant. Writing children's books is an art and an entirely different skill, which I do not have. I haven't looked at it since 2014. I have no doubt that it is Not At All Any Good. I was working on it at the time I was reading Catherine The Great by Robert K. Massey. Libby Ester, Carleton class of 1979, teacher of 5th grade, read it and wrote notes for a 2012 draft .. Included. There's another letter about from I THINK Elizabeth Weinstein, also Class of '79, my first reader since the days of Crafts of Writing One and Two with Keith Harrison.
